STVT’s welding trade school in Corpus Christi is intended for students who desire a career in the welding industry. STVT’s Combination Welding Training

As a student in one of our welding courses in Texas, students have the opportunity to learn welding skills such as shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and flux core arc welding— which play a role in construction and maintenance efforts across the country.  

What Do Welders Do?

A variety of welding skills may prove useful in the field. Welders often focus on beginning-to-end work, studying blueprints and calculating dimensions in addition to completing actual construction welding work. At STVT, we focus on providing hands-on education in many steps of the welding process to set students up for success.

Preparation Duties

Our CW program also provides students with the opportunity to learn several preparation duties, including:

  • Basic and specific safety procedures
  • Specifics of particular construction materials
  • Working with potentially hazardous materials
  • Confined workspace safety
  • Welding inspection
  • Job safety and protective clothing
  • Understanding welding symbols

Welding Duties

Our programs focus on four welding techniques commonly used in the field, including

  • Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW)
    • Open V grooves
    • Flat and horizontal welds
    • Stainless steel grooves
    • CNC cutting
    • Plasma arc cutting
  • Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and Flux core arc welding (FCAW)
    • Safe equipment use
    • Stringer bead and weave bead construction
    • Proper plate positioning and welding
    • GMAW pipe welding techniques
    • GMAW stringer bead preparation
  • Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW)
    • Interpass temperature control
    • Position padding
    • Open-groove welds in multiple positions
    • Procedures to preserve weldment strength
    • V-groove pile and pipe welds in multiple positions

Equipment Maintenance

Welders often work with extreme heat, which takes its toll on even the hardiest tools. Welders may be responsible for maintaining their tools, so we cover how to repair and fix commonly used tools to keep them working at their best.
